JOB TITLE: Assomption Invasive Mammal Eradication Project Manager Consultant

DURATION: 3 years (part-time)
LOCATION: Remote with travel to project sites
INCLUDES: Travel costs for one site visit annually
SIF is seeking to recruit a project manager with expertise in island ecosystem management and invasive mammal eradication planning, to oversee the Assomption Invasive Mammal Eradication (AIME) Project. This includes technical oversight of the Feasibility and technical assessment due to commence in July 2026, followed by planning and implementing the eradication operation on Assomption in conjunction with the operations manager and the wider SIF team.
The consultant will have extensive experience in Seychelles/Indian Ocean large-scale conservation project management, expert familiarity with the ecosystems of Assomption and the wider area and expertise in Invasive Alien Species management, particularly tropical island small mammal eradications. The role will provide high-level technical leadership and guidance to ensure that the feasibility technical assessment is designed and implemented according to international best practice and to inform operational planning and maximise chances of eradication success.
The consultant will be responsible for overseeing project staff and consultant workplans and driving the project from conception to completion, in close collaboration with SIF science and conservation staff.
The consultant will critically review field project reports and feasibility consultant outputs, will work closely with teams to generate the evidence to support a science-based eradication strategy for Assomption. The role will include information synthesis across the entire project. The consultant will have oversight of project timelines, be responsible for achieving project milestones and oversight of field safety, operational planning, risk management, including mitigation strategies to minimise impacts on native biodiversity.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Doctorate degree in environmental science/conservation (essential)
- 10+ years of project/conservation management experience (essential)
- 5+ years’ experience in Seychelles conservation management (essential)
- 5+ years’ experience of leading scientific research and publications
- 4+ years’ experience in invasive mammal eradication science and practice (essential)
- Extensive experience in leadership or advisory roles on multiple successful island conservation projects (essential)
- Demonstrated experience in feasibility and technical assessments for large-scale island eradications (essential)
- Experience of trialling and applying pioneering methods in successfully to address eradication challenges (desirable)
- Data compilation, management and analysis capacity in addition to information sythesis
- Comprehensive knowledge of rodent and feral cat eradication methods, including recent advances in the field (essential)
- Strong publication record and recognised leadership within island conservation community (essential)
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate challenges, identify risks, and pioneer effective solutions
- Well-established international professional network within the invasive mammal eradication field (desirable)
- Demonstrated experience of working closely with an international team, and a good understanding of cross-cultural working with strong communication/sensitivity (essential)
