JOB TITLE:                    Maintenance and Logistic Assistant

SALARY:                          SG2 (as per SIF Scheme of Service)

RESPONSIBLE TO:         Island Manager

HOURS OF WORK:        40 hours per week and overtime as required by operational needs

WORK LOCATION:           Aldabra Atoll

 

JOB PURPOSE

The Maintenance & Logistic Assistant provides operational and technical support to the Aldabra Research Station. This role assists in maintaining station infrastructure, field camps, equipment, and essential services. The post holder works under the supervision of the Maintenance & Logistic Technician and Island Manager, contributing to the smooth functioning of station operations, conservation, and research programmes.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance Support

  • Assist in routine maintenance and minor repairs of station infrastructure, including buildings, field huts, accommodation, and storage facilities.
  • Support the upkeep of water storage facilities, trails, and field camps to ensure operational readiness.
  • Assist in the maintenance and service of generators, pumps, solar systems, and other technical equipment under supervision.
  • Maintain cleanliness, orderliness, and safe storage of tools, equipment, and spare parts.

Logistical Support

  • Assist in the handling, transport, and storage of supplies, equipment, and materials across the station.
  • Support operational activities such as loading/unloading cargo, fuel handling, and inventory management.
  • Assist in coordinating logistical support for research, conservation, and visitor activities as required.

Field and Conservation Assistance

  • Provide support to research and conservation teams in trail clearance, transect maintenance, and field infrastructure upkeep.
  • Follow environmental guidelines and SIF policies while working in sensitive habitats.

Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance

  • Follow safety procedures and wear appropriate protective equipment when performing tasks.
  • Report hazards, accidents, or maintenance issues to the Maintenance & Logistic Technician or Island Manager promptly.
  • Support environmentally responsible practices in all maintenance and logistical activities.

Coordination and Reporting

  • Receive instructions from the Maintenance & Logistic Technician (direct supervisor) and Island Manager, and carry them out efficiently.
  • Keep records of maintenance activities, supply usage, and minor repairs as required.
  • Assist in identifying issues requiring technical or supervisory attention.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • City and Guilds certification from SIT with at least 2–3 years relevant experience in maintenance, construction, mechanical, or related field.

 

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Basic technical knowledge in building, mechanical, or electrical maintenance.
  • Willingness to learn and develop technical skills under supervision.
  • Ability to work in a remote, isolated environment and adapt to field conditions.
  • Reliable, flexible, and able to perform multiple tasks as needed.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills.
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) is an advantage.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of other languages will be an advantage.
