Context and Background
The Operations Manager (OM) plays a critical role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of de Fond Ferdinand (FF). Under the direct supervision of the Site Manager, the OM supports the achievement of the site’s operational, conservation, and tourism objectives. The postholder is responsible for developing and implementing work plans, supervising staff, allocating duties, and ensuring priorities are aligned with FF’s management and environmental goals.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Site operations and infrastructures
- Oversee and coordinate daily operations of all sections and units within FF, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
- Manage and maintain all infrastructures under FF’s jurisdiction, both within and outside the protected area boundaries.
- Ensure proper maintenance of paths, trails, firebreaks, and other ecological assets in accordance with protected area regulations.
- Ensure regular patrols are conducted to enforce park regulations and protect biodiversity.
- Oversee the maintenance and care of tools, furniture, fixtures, and equipment under FF’s control.
- Be available for emergency response and after-hours duties when necessary.
2. Staff supervision and management
- Supervise staff, handle grievances, and support employee relations in compliance with the Employment Act and SIF policies, in consultation with the Head Office.
- Organize and chair monthly staff meetings to ensure clear communication and coordination.
3. Visitor services and Public Relations
- Ensure a high standard of visitor services and compliance with park regulations and visitor management policies.
- Coordinate VIP and official visits, as well as organized group tours.
- Foster collaboration with external partners to coordinate environmental education and outreach programs within the local community.
4. Environmental protection and enforcement
- Lead and coordinate anti-poaching patrols, both internally and with external enforcement partners.
- Liaise with the Police to assist with poaching investigations and case processing.
- Support firefighting and fire prevention efforts, working in partnership with other relevant agencies.
- Coordinate activities related to Coco de Mer collection and management of invasive species.
- Promote and implement Environmental Management System (EMS) practices, including energy efficiency and the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
5. Logistics, procurement and finance
- Oversee procurement processes and stock management to ensure availability of supplies and prevent wastage, with accurate and updated records.
- Ensure proper collection, recording, and timely banking of all revenues generated at FF.
- Supervise maintenance of vehicles under FF’s responsibility, ensuring licenses and insurance are current.
- Manage the logistics of incoming and outgoing cargo as required.
- Respond to alerts and incidents raised by the security firm while on duty or standby.
6. Research and reporting
- Facilitate access for researchers conducting approved studies at RFF and support them in meeting their research objectives.
- Prepare work plans, activity schedules, and submit monthly operational reports to the Site Manager.
7. Other duties
- Perform any other work-related tasks as delegated by the Site Manager.
Job Specification
Qualifications & Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Protected Area Management, or a related field is preferred.
OR
- Diploma in Management, Conservation, Eco-Tourism, or related discipline with extensive supervisory and operational experience may also be considered.
OR
- Training or exposure in logistics, people management, or eco-tourism operations would be an advantage
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years in a senior supervisory or management role, preferably in a conservation, eco-tourism, or protected area environment.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong people management and leadership skills.
- Ability to delegate, supervise, and make sound operational decisions.
- High level of computer literacy, especially in MS Word, Excel, and email communication.
- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental management practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle conflict and difficult situations professionally.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Willingness to respond to emergency calls and work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays as needed.
