JOB TITLE:                                       Senior Accountant / Financial Controller

LOCATION:                                       SIF Head Office (Mahé)

SALARY BAND:                               SG9

RESPONSIBLE TO:                          Financial controller / Chief Executive Officer

HOURS OF WORK:                          40 hours per week and upon request of overtime  

Duties and responsibilities:

The Senior Accountant oversees the general accounting operations of the Seychelles Islands Foundation by controlling and verifying all financial transactions. The responsibilities include reconciling account balances and bank statements, maintaining a general ledger and preparing month-end close procedures. Work is performed by applying knowledge of accounting terminology and using spreadsheets and/or automated accounting systems. Verify items billed against items ordered and received and reconciles differences through follow-up with the vendor and/or other employees.  

These include but are not limited to:                                                                                 

  1. Supervises and oversees the work of the accounts staff and make necessary arrangements for replacements as and when needed in liaison with Human Resources.
  2. Reviews and authorize cheque payments and online transfers
  3. Checks payment vouchers/LPO requests
  4. Replies to queries through emails/letters and telephone calls
  5. Reviews monthly Pension Fund report/PIT process for payment
  6. Verifies monthly salary for both locals and expatriates
  7. Review monthly reconciliations and all postings
  8. Checks petty cash recoupment/banking/purchase orders
  9. Reconciles monthly payroll
  10. Reviews inventory journal for postings
  11. Performs postings

In the absence of a Financial Controller, the Senior Accountant will also assume the following responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for the planning, directing and coordinating the financial accounting functions and formulating financial policies
  2. Assesses the financial situation and advising on the SIF’s financial performance
  3. Controls the expenditure and taking measures to ensure efficient use of funds
  4. Prepares budget and management reports and oversees the various accounting operations of the SIF
  5. Prepares month by the month income statement
  6. Prepares management account on a monthly/quarterly basis with cash analysis for board meetings
  7. Attends to staff and external queries via email, telephone
  8. Reviews postings month by month to ensure completeness
  9. Updates monthly schedules along with the posting of monthly journals
  10. Prepares invoices
  11. Attends to revenues and debtors chasing

Liaison with the external auditor

  1.  Prepares a financial statement for reviews by the external auditor
  2. Responds to management letter points

Qualifications and requirements for this post:

ACCA Professional Level Member/Affiliate or the equivalent of a Master’s Degree in Finance

OR F1 to F9 plus Professional Ethics Module and the Oxford Brookes University Research and Analysis or equivalent Degree in Accounting plus two years satisfactory work experience as Assistant Accountant

OR AAT Final plus five years satisfactory work experience as an Accountant

Skills and attributes:

A successful Senior Accountant combines excellent analytical skills with a thorough knowledge of accounting principles to analyze financial reports and forecasts. The ideal candidate has also experience collaborating and/or managing a team of Accountants and junior Accounts Technicians. A Senior Accountant is required to a logical mind and an aptitude for numbers. Other skills needed for the job include:

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • The ability to maintain clear and accurate financial records
  • Computer literacy and the ability to use various specialist applications and software (POS/Peachtree/HRS)
  • Reasonable excess/access/word processing skills

Languages:

Fluency in Creole and English is essential.
